(In response to Willie's question, "How do you take trout at Kapowsin?") Kapowsin is one of my favorite lakes, mostly because of the huge variety of fish. I've caught at least ten species there and it's my favorite place to bring a kid in the summer. Trout are finicky everywhere, but here's what's worked for me. Wedding rings tipped with a little worm and doused with some kind of scent usually bring strikes. I sometimes add a little weight to sink things slightly and I troll just fast enough to turn the blade. Fish will strike best when you are distracted. Opening sandwiches or beverages will trigger strikes, as will fiddling with the trolling motor or looking at the skydivers. Experiment with different distractions. Besides wedding rings, drifting a power egg and half a worm usually works as well. Put a swivel a couple of feet up your line so as not to twist things up too badly. I like to cover the open, relatively stump-free section of the lake to the south of the resort. I've taken trout as large as 17" from the lake and I've seen bigger ones taken. There's usually a few powerbait fisherman working the dock and I've seen them take fish up to three pounds. In a boat, I like to chase rises. In the warmer weather, I've often picked up the odd trout while tossing small worms out for bluegill. Winter can mean slim pickings at the lake. If fish-free solitude doesn't do it for you, you might check the state stocking tables and show up a week after the trucks. The lake is usually planted in early spring. I hope some of this helps.
