Rat Lake is about 8 miles North of Brewster and is open Dec.1-March 31 There are rainbows, browns and dolly varden. Rat Lk used to open on Nov.1 and stay open till the end of May and provided a excellent fishery early and late in the season.. The powers to be decided to move it to a Dec-March lake 3 or 4 years ago and now very few people fish it. My girlfriend and I drove over for the day and made it to the lake about 10:30am. It was cloudy and calm with the temp. about 42, so not too bad for this time of year. There were a few boats on the water and 6 people on the shoreline, so not much of a crowd!...Much of the lake is fishable from shore, so you don't need a boat. I was in the water about 30 seconds with marshmallow and worm and had my first fish, a nice 14 inch brown. I thought this was going to be easy, but we fished for about a half hour without another bite. Several small ones 6-8 inch were reeled up and luckily fell off. We moved several times and finally found the hot spot.
