Well Opening Day was off and running strong. Was camping on the Oregon side
and hit the parking lot at 7:30 am on Saturday only to find about 150 rigs
already there. Found a parking spot and we were off. Me and my friend were
the only one's fly fishing so I thought we may have an advantage (Boy was I
right!). Most of the people there were bank fishing and there were about a
1/2 dozen boats on the water-some not so nice. Please remember float-tubers
have the same rights on the waters as you so please don't try to push them
out of the way by heading straight for us. Anyway back to the report. Well
I had my first 9 fish in the first 15 minutes. I then saw a really nice 27"
8 1/2 lb Triploid caught off the bank. Well I was just about to pull out of
the lake after nothing but 19 stocker fish when I decided to drag my hand
tied black wooly bugger through the millfoil. I was kicking and stripping
slowly when I felt an enormous amount of weight. Luckily I set the hook and
the fight was on! 20 minutes later I was able to land (with the help of a
nearby boat because it was simply too big for my net) a nice healthy 10 lb 0
oz Triploid Rainbow. Was using a 5 wt fly rod with 6 lb tippet so I got very
lucky that I even was able to bring this to the surface without the line
snapping. In fact as soon as we got it in the boat the line broke just
above my knot on the fly. It measured 29 1/2 inches and was told by WDFW
that it was the largest of the day. My friend ended up with 5 additional
this day.
