Thanks to as favored owed by a co-worker, I managed one more trip for sockeye. My kids and I hit the water at 5:30am and had our gear down. Matt is getting quite good at running downriggers. Makes life easier for me. We caught our first fish at 7am, a nice buck at 80 feet on a 5/0 blue hook that another boater gave me (thanks buddy). Things were pretty quiet till 9am, when a steady bite that lasted about an hour started. Boats all around us began bring them in. We hit number two, a hen, at 80 feet on a black hook. The rest of the morning saw fish being caught all around us, steady enough to wonder why we weren't getting any. We ended the day at noon with the two fish. Better than nothing but by far the slowest day of the season. Didn't even lose any.
Of note for the next season. The guy that was using the 5/0 blue hooks mentioned that he also would put a power nugget on the hook and that all his fish took the hook deep. Interesting...
