Got to the Atlantic Park launch at 5:20 am, the parking lot had just filled up. We started fishing at 5:30. Pretty slow at first- a fish here, a double there. At 7 am we began to hit fish. Three by 7:20, losing one of them. Three more hits by 8am. We were fishing at 50-70 feet deep on the downrigger with dodgers and black and red 3/0 hooks. The action slowed down at 8:30, we would hit a fish every 30-45 minutes. We called it a day at 11 am. Final tally: two nice bucks and two nice hens in the boat. Lost 5 either on the way up or at the net. Color and depth comparisons: One fish on a red hook at 55 feet, eight fish at 70 feet on a black hook. A couple observations: Because you're trolling at a slow speed, it seems like solid hook-ups are harder to get. You really need to drive the hook home. Second, these fish come straight up when hooked. You've got to REEL fast to keep up with them (I think my kids got tried of hearing me yell "REEL"!). This fishery is definitely a downrigger fishery in my opinion.
