My and my buddy went down to Magnussen Park this afternoon after school for some smallmouth fishing. The surface temp. was 54 degrees, and the weather was about 58-60 and cloudy. After we had fished for a while with grubs on jigheads and nightcrawlers for a while with only a few bites, a enormous school of 8-14 inch cutthroats came through (by the way we were fishing near the boat launch, just north of it) and were jumping all over the place, and rising to some kind of insect, but I couldn't tell what kind, they were impossible to catch. At that point I REALLY regretted leaving my fly rod at home, but, a chartreuse rooster tail seemed to bring strikes every cast. We caught and released some cutts, the biggest running about 16 inches. The key was to fish about 6 inches under the surface about 20-30 feet from shore with a moderate, steady retrieve. Good luck!
