It was a nice hot sunny day, so I figured the warmwater fishing would pick up in the shallows. I float tubed the area near the old public boat launch (now closed to vehicles but people often carry small boats down anyway).
Fishing for bluegills, small largemouth and rock bass (often mistaken for smallmouth) was good.
I used small beetlespins and crappie jigs. This lake is full of snags so use cheap lures and expect to lose lots of them, or use weedless lures. I would cast towards shore, retrieve, then stop in mid retrieve to allow the lure to drop next to logs, stumps etc. Strikes occur on the drop. If the warm weather keeps up I'm going to hit the lake with flyrod and bass bugs and poppers in the evening. If you are into flyfishing and haven't tried flyfishing for bass you're missing out. Even a small bass on a flyrod puts up quite a fight, especially a trout weight rod!
P. S. A few notes about Kapowsin Lake: This lake seems to attract a rather dubious crowd. DO NOT leave any valuables in your vehicle here, they WILL BE STOLEN. That's why the public boat launch is closed. I lost almost all my fishing gear here about 2 years ago. I walked down to the lake just to get a look, when I came back my canopy had been broken into and about $1000
worth of rods, reels and tackle had been stolen. I had been gone 5-10 minutes. Needless to say, I'll never do that again. This lake also seems to attract people who are genetically incapable of carrying out their trash.
These so-called anglers leave powerbait jars, worm containers, snell
packages, chip bags, and beer cans and bottles lying around along the bank.
Pick up the slack for these losers and carry out some of their trash with you when you leave. Despite the negatives, however, this lake is an excellent place to fish. Difficult access and large size keeps the crowds down (Erickson's rents boats and has a launch at the north end of the lake), all the stumps and logs keep the powerboaters and jetski maniacs away, and this lake provides both good trout fishing in the cooler months and good warmwater fishing in the summer. There are some real lunker bass in here.
