I have the same motor, I was in a tournament at Clear Lake and the algea bloom was bad, the same thing happened to my motor, it would get on plane and sputter/smoke like it was overheating, I took it home and ran water through the lower unit with the rabbit ears without running the boat for 5-10 min...

Liberty. It's a great lake with huge potential. Just slow it down you should get a sniff or two. I'm picking my boat up next weekend and I'll hit Liberty my following day off.
