I'm getting pretty pumped about this weekend. I've been keeping an eye on the surf forecast and I am still not sure about taking the boat up there. What technique do you use to catch the giant perch? Just bottom fish with a dropshot and hook/bait or do you jig? I've surf casted a couple times from the beach but haven't tried my hand at jetty fishing for perch.

Thanks for the input! I ended up scoring a 6hp yamaha kicker for a great deal. I think it's a bit small for the ocean but should do great for trolling in the lakes. I'm in need of a kicker but it might be a while before I have the funds. What are your opinions on using a trolling plate as an alternative? Fried smelt sound tasty. I have heard that once fried you can pull the heads of the smaller ones off and the entrails go with the head then you can just pop the rest into your mouth bones and all. I also have had good luck with 4 oz jigheads with white curly tail jigs

I didn't get a chance to get any smelt, but I am curious how you all like to prepare them. Maybe seeing all of these recipes will help me prepare for next year.

Thanks for the replies! I plan on getting out there this weekend at some point. Most likely it will be sunday. I'll post in this thread before I go out. Not sure if I am going to fool with the boat or bank fish off the bottom for trout.
