I own this rod, and would agree with you that it does feel like medium/heavy. They have plenty of backbone and are strong rods. Out of all the DXS rods the 9 felt the best. The rest of the rods feel worse in your hands and are extremely in balanced. I even talked to one of the rep of Daiwa and he told me the 9 was the best and the others could have been made better and are way to heavy. I would not buy another one again though, even if they were cheap.

Re: daiwa DXS rod
I've got a 9'6 Medium casting one myself. I got it lightly used for a really good price so I figured I would give it a shot. It's pretty much a medium heavy like you said and while I've only used it a few times it seems like a fairly good rod for its size and price. The only thing I would say is yes it does feel "heavy", especially paired up with a Daiwa Lexa 300 but it does balances well together, and it isn't as sensitive as I would like (hard for me to compare because I have never fished another rod similar to this or one of the higher end rods) for drift fishing. I've pretty much made it my float rod for kings for now unless I'm out on the sound where I plan to jig/mooch/troll for kings with it.
