New to salmon fishing. Want to get on chums

Have caught a few pinks but they were a no brainer seeing as how they were basically hugging against my feet about to die. Heard the chums should be starting to hit the inland waters and was wondering if anyone can give me a few pointers. What rivers, rig set ups and such??

well the watcom and skagit produce great numbers, also skokohomish does well too. Most of the rivers feeding inot hte sound and off the coast do pretty well for chum.

green anything. I did happen to buy some green corky yarn combos. was wondering if putting anything on the hook such as worms would work better than just the hook. from what i read the returning salmon are not really interested in eating.

I don't know about worms but chums will hit prawns/shrimp.

Yeah i went to Chico Creek 2 days ago, still not really any fish at all. I also went to Tahuya, the Skok, and Hoodsport that day. Heard there were silvers in Tahuya but all those fish are above the tiny little bridge you can't fish above where there are actually holes they sit in. Skokomish has silvers and chum in them right now, but i had the butt end of the gravel bar so i said screw it after 30 minutes, only if I had gotten there a few minutes earlier and I could've gotten the spot where one of the logjams are at, saw a guy fishing there that caught 3 or 4 fish while I was there in that spot. I'll probably go back to the Skok since there is alot of fish in the areas, just need to find a good spot. Hoodsport was horrible, the indians were netting and had about 5 nets out there, with one of the nets about 20 yards right in front of the mouth of the area. Saw about 10 chum in the side area where the fish sit until they go up to the hatchery.

Where on the skok were you?

Off the purdy cutoff road. Right in front of the gated dirt road on the right off the road. You have to walk back about a 1/4 of a mile to the spot. I guess you can also just park on the bridge at Hunter's Farm too, it's probably closer.

jbball50, I fished the logjam hole a few weeks ago, do you suggest fishing here for the chums? It was pretty snaggy where I was fishing. People were using 1oz cannonballs, seemed heavy to me, but then again, I didn't catch anything.

Kennedy Creek is a chum hotspot.or the Nisqually.Anything green is correct. Were all going from pink to green.Also the Satsop river has a huge run of Chums. The Satsop right now is loaded with Chums ,Cohos,and some Steel.

Went to Chico Creek this morning, and the schools are in. Saw ALOT of Chums jumping and heading up the creek. They get spooked real easy though, and it didnt help that there were several seals out there also. Got a hit off my hoochie but that was it. I only fished for about an hour, so I'm going there later this afternoon/early evening and trying my corkie/yarn set up.

Yeah I'm not sure of the exact weight I use when I fish over there but it's definitely not 1 ounce, I use slinkies with split shots in them. I haven't fished that area targeting chum. I've mostly targeted chum in Hood Canal out in the saltwater. One of my fav spots is just past the bridge on the Skok by Hunters Farm, right before the State Park where there's a little turn off by the side of the road where theres a sign that says "emergency parking only". The chum can get packed in that little bay when they're in there.

just by glancing at the replies to this post i figure that most of the creeks the chum are running are in the south puget sound area. any good creeks a little further north? i live in seattle

I have heard chico gets pretty wild, and would like to fish it one day. But I also recomend Kennedy Creek. This is where my first chum was caught and have never been skunked there. With about a 45 min drive from S Seattle its tough to beat.

FYI...my buddy just called and said the chum are thick at Chico. Maybe 20 cars parked and four boats on the water...lots of fish in the creek as well

BassDood, Im going there tomorrow morning, i live 5 minutes from there, was only 2 people there yesterday at that time. They slowly started pouring in as lunch time hit. But yeah they were in there thick.
