Advise on getting a Salmon/Steelhead Rod

Post by Jordan » Thu Mar 31, 2011 8:54 am

I am looking at getting a medium or medium/heavy spinning rod for salmon and steelhead fishing. I have been looking at the Lamiglas rods and really like them. I'm just not sure what model and all of that... Also any suggestions of a good spinning reel to go with it? I have an idea, but am totally open for suggestions. Thanks!

Lamiglass is great. I have had great luck with my 8'6 Ugly Stick.

I'd go with a shimano stradic, I use it, and it's amazing. You can shove it into the mud bank and pull it out and it'll be just fine. If you're going to put the money into it with a lamiglas rod, that's the reel I'd get. They cast way smoother, and they feel like a solid rock. Every day I use it it feels like the first day with a brand new reel.

For the salt, I have 2 Ugly Stick medium light 9' rods with Penn reels and I love them. They are very durable, have great action, and because they are inexpensive I have no reservations about using them in the salt. If you rinse them off afterwards and take care of them they last forever. If I were fishing in fresh water I would buy a Lamiglas which I personally have as well and love it.

For spinning reels I always recommend Pflueger Presidents, I have several and they have worked well for me for the price. I picked up a Diawa Tierra last fall and it has worked great for me fishing the winter run and cohos last season.

What type of fishing will you be doing (bank/boat? float/drift/spoons/etc.)? That will help to determine the right rod for you.

I fish not because I regard fishing as being terribly important, but because I suspect that so many of the other concerns of men are equally unimportant, and not nearly so much fun. ~ John Volker

I have a president and absolutely love it! I normally use Pflueger or Abu Garcia reels. They have always been great for me. I'm willing to spend up to $100 for a reel.
I am looking for a rod that is pretty versatile and able to drift, spoons, buzz bombs, plugs, put on a down rigger and troll a flasher and whatever behind it. Jig and float.. I've kind of been leaning towards a couple Lamiglas rods that are 8'6" and 8-17 lb test. Medium or Medium/Heavy rods.

i'd look at getting a 9'6" if you're wanting to jig & bobber or spoon fish. shorter than that really becomes a hassle to keep you're line outta the water.

I have a 10ft x10mc certified pro that's rated 10-20 lb that's awesome (it's a casting rod though) maybe look to see if they make a spinning rod out of that blank. It would be (in my opinion) perfect for an all around rod.
Fishing relaxes me. It's like yoga, except i still get to kill something.

That would be my recommendation too. I've got my Tierra on a 10'6" M/H Okuma SST. I've heard others on this site slam the SSTs, but for the $$ it has served me very well - I use it for drifting, spoons/spinners, and my backup float/jig rig.

I have a 9'6" Lamiglass, Bud Ramsey baitcaster rod that I paired with a Curado 200 E series for my float/jig setup and I love it.

I am a bankie so the longer rods work best for me, in a boat you aren't going to need the length.

I do all of my fishing from my two boats. In fresh water lakes I fish the Lamiglas MBS 702UL which is their ultra light 7' rod. BTW, I didn't know what model it was off the top of my head LOL, I went out to the garage and checked for you. It's actually my wife's rod but I love it. I also fish a Fenwick Eagle GT 7' rod which I like very much and have two of. I grew up with Fenwick rods so I own 3 of them. Two spinning and one fly rod which I've had since I was 5 years old and still use to this day.

I'm not sure what model to recommend to you if you are planning on fishing for salmon in the rivers. I would personally go as light as I could without risk of snapping it. So for me, it would depend on the size of fish I am targeting. In lakes I just fish for rainbow and other species of trout so I like the 7' UL rods for that. My salt rods are medium light 9' so I can really feel the fish which in my opinion is what its all about. I guess I'm saying go as light as you can without risk of snapping the rod, based on the size of fish you will be after. Sorry I couldn't be of more help.

no thank you! I have a 7' medium action Fenwick spinning rod and I use it for SO many types of fishing! I catch trout, panfish, bass, steelhead, walleye, etc. It's great. I was looking at a medium to medium/heavy 8'6" rod so it'd be fairly versatile.
