Solved problem for cold weather starts

Post by river rat » Sat Mar 21, 2009 7:35 am

I don't know if this will help any boaters out there, but wanted to pass on this info in case it does. I've had trouble starting my older 85 Johnson in cold weather for the last couple of seasons thinking it was probably ready for a carb rebuild. I went on iboats forum and read about similar problems and one of the troubleshooting points was to check to make sure your choke butterflies were closing all the way. After pulling the carb cowling and inspecting the carb intakes I saw that mine were closing, but not all the way. A linkage screw on the side had come loose to prevent total closer at full choke. It made a huge difference in starting and hopefully my winter fishing trips aren't limited to putting out to the honey hole with my kicker!
