my outboard got stolen!

Post by P-FITZ98 » Thu Jun 04, 2009 1:22 pm

Last Sat., my motor was swiped off my boat in my yard. 15 horse 4-stroke Mercury.Locking them isnt enough. Just want others to know, and hope it wont happen to them. They busted the lock on the jack-screws, so im looking into better security for the next motor I cant afford now, but a man has to fish.

P -
That sucks dude and sorry to hear about it going into the summer especially. Might not do any good but maybe worth a shot, check the local pawn shops to see if anyone tried to exchange one for cash and keep an eye out on craigslist.

Most local police agencies have access to a program on their computer and they can see who pawned what and how much they got. You might want to try this and see what they come up with, you have to have the serial number. Good luck bro!

Hey P-FITZ,
I'm very sorry to hear that you lost your motor. I too have lost items from my boat and pickup in the past and I truly feel for you. One thing I have found after losing a couple of expensive rods & reels that could work for you because you know exactly what was taken is to have really good insurance. You might not even have to pay a deductible if you have a police report depending how you have your policy set up. Last year State Farm waived my deductible because I had the police report. When I insured my boat I made sure that I put as much insurance on it as I could including replacement costs for boat contents. I was even able to replace a digital camera that was taken along with my gear because it was listed on the police report and I had the original receipt. The coverage I have on my boat costs me $300.00 per year but I figure it’s worth it because kickers are prime targets for thieves and tweaker scum and if I have to replace mine at least I’ll be able to afford too. Also if you own your home and don’t have replacement coverage for boat contents you could possibly turn in an insurance claim on your home owners insurance.
Good luck to you.

My kicker has holes that allow me to drill through the kicker bracket to attach it. I have been looking for some type of locking bolts but haven't seen anything like that. Does anyone more mechanically inclined have any ideas?

look into the bolts that use hex keys or the ones that use special type sockets and bolt with that. tweakers and scumbags don't want a challenge and usually pass them up if they can't get a wrench on it or cut it. helps too if everyone in the neighborhood thinks you'll shoot first and ask q?'s later.

You might try to use locking nuts for fancy wheels on cars ...some are really hard to get off without the right tool! Seems like they would be easy to install....good luck, Steve

It doesn't matter what you do. If they want it, they will steal it. Alarms, special bolts and nuts, chains, cables and all that crap mean nothing. If it's not locked inside and they want it they will take it. Less than minute to steal any kicker no matter how it's attached and alarmed. Two and half minutes tops for them to steal a hundred plus hp outboard.
If they want it, they will take it.

Sorry to burst the bubble.

This is exactly why I have my boat and everything in it insured to the hilt.
