N. Fork Clearwater Was Hot!

Post by eustace » Tue Nov 11, 2008 6:49 pm

A buddy and I fished the N. F. Clearwater between the hatchery and the Dworshak dam fri-sun. It was the hottest Steelheading I've ever experienced. We got on the water friday at 2:30 in the afternoon and I had my limit of three fish by 4:30. Most people were fishing bobbers jig set ups I was drifting eggs. My first fish was an ugly 14lb hen then a 12 lb hen in a little better shape. The highlight of friday is the last fish of the day and the largest and most exciting a 18lb+ buck. This fish was dark but very healthy and strong. Sat morning we got started before light. I caught two more fish at 11lbs and 13lbs, these two fish were fairly beat up. My Buddy caught finally caught a fish at noon and the second soon after a 15 and a 9lb fish. From that last fish at about 1:00 not a single bight the rest of the day or the next. I am planning another three day trip for the 21st to the 23rd. I have been down trying for a steelhead since several times with no sucsess just hope for just one, what trip. Anyone else doing good on this small stretch of a river.

I have been on the clearwater every other weekend since I first posted this report and I have yet to be skunked. My biggest fish so far a 21# hen. The fish this year are averaging the heaviest I have ever heard off, problebly better than the Skagit, Satsop or the Cowlitz. I Used to to live in the Seattle area fishing every chance I got, and here not far from home the best Steelheading I ever expirienced for number of hook ups and shear size. I will say have caught more fish in a day on the Grand Rond than any other river but I rarley pick up fish over 12#s there. When I get my film developed I will try to scan and transfer the pics. "O" yeah I moved from fishing the North fork to floating the mainstem from the Slaughter house hole to a mile or so below the pink house.
