Great story. I didn't realize that Chet was still around. Every time that I've fished the Pillar pt area I think of that fish and the possibility of another one that size that just might be lurking around.

Got it on 12lb test that must of been pretty scary knowing that fighting a fish like that, those fish are still around too, I was down at soos creek the other day and they got a 60 something back in the salt that could have gone 70...

I remember a few years back while trolling out at the bubble (8-2) talking to an older man who said that the day before he landed a 60 and 70 pounder. I wounder if his fish would have beat the state record (if it was as big as he said) but who knows, i never saw it

I'm gonna say fish story IMO. Rare to hear of anything 40+ in the sound these day....

Would love to crack the 30lb mark in the inner sound. I've gone and done it up in Alaska, Canada and such, but something special about hooking a big king and landing it in the sound would be very cool.

fish story IMO. Tulalip bubble has some nice kings but not that big. I have been at the marina when they have had a couple of the 4'x4'x4' bins that they(indians) load the salmon into and there are several large ones that come in there but for the most part they are cookie cutter(large), they are all about the same exact fish. My living room window looks out to the bubble.

I saw that story on TV a few days ago. The thing that stuck me is that the state was planning to "reset the records"... that seemed rather peculiar to me. Seems if you won a record you would like to keep it, if no one ever catches anything over 70 lbs that record will drop jaws for generations to come when my kids and grand kids think, "man, there used to be fish THAT big in Washington, WOW!"

70 lbs should last for a while if not forever. Atleast in the Puget Sound. Anything over 30lb is veryyyyy uncommon in the Sound, maybe a few up to 40lbs...

If I were to look for a 70 lber I'd go take a peek at the Skagit system....

I am naturally a skeptic about many stories like this one , but I have seen fish in the bins at tulalip that I believe were state if not world records of coho and chum salmon, both in the last ten years . Also when you consider stories like that of the old world record steelhead where all parties involved thought it was a king but since a nine year old caught it they took it to the taxidermist who quickly identified that catch as a 42+ pound steelhead. These are the reasons that I still think that the records can be beat and that some of the fish stories are based on reality.

This was a solid 6 years ago when it was way more common for bigger fish there. It must have been 4 years or so i had a king out there to the side of the boat the was easily 50, it was the biggest king ive ever seen in person. But sadly lost it from those dang barbless hoook, its the one that got away

That is neat that he tours around showing young ones and a cool story. But is it just me or does that taxidermy and even the old photos thing look small to be 70? They did say they weighed it though... Hmm. Maybe some of my fish were bigger than I thought...
