Northwest Fishing Reports

I'm not a big fan of Buoy 10. I prefer to fish the URB wobbler fishery upriver around Longview and Kalama. This video was made last week when there was a minus tide and a big runoff, taken around and under the Astoria bridge.

That was pretty stupid but I feel bad for that guy. His dumb move is now all over the World Wide Web for every fisherman to see...I'd be trying to take that video down. Pretty funny when it went under the bridge though...What a zoo. Some HUGE fish down there though...

I dunno, after watching the video in slow mow. Frame by frame. Not to certain the boat hit the cement pillar. Might have broken the antenna's, or flipped them down. Later in the video, the Port side of the Charter boat is visible. Does not appear to have any major damage or removed paint. Just prior to floating under the bridge, there is a cloud of smoke. Looked to be diesel exhaust from the engines. As, the boat was jockeyed to miss the cement support.

Definitely not a planned drift....I would think!

The water is moving! Could almost troll into the current, but drift back to slow the troll. A technique used by drift boat fishermen, isn't it? Is it back bouncing or something like that?

It's called back trolling or pulling plugs, bait divers, etc. Back bouncing is done with weights as you slowly back down the slot, you lift up and swing them back behind the boat.

To me it looks like they lost their antennae on the bridge as they went under it, doesn't look like they hit the pillar. Still, I would be concerned that the charter would make such a dangerous drift.

That looked like some pretty scary and unforgiving water to me......I had delusions of using my 12' livie to fish buoy 10 in the lower Columbia, that video cleared up that stupid idea for me. No way my set up could handle those conditions.

Thanks Nate, was curious about that technique. Risky? Definitly! If'n the Captain was following the fish to the other side, in hindsight, don't "think" it was worth it.

I would definitely not take my boat out there. Even with a 10 hp on the back, I don't think it could fight the current. Not a small boat show.

Your boat with a 10hp does 15mph? The congestion of people, and boats is definitely not for everyone. Turning the boat to chase a fish or stay on top of it. Should not have to require dodging boats and gear.

That whole situation looks like more than I would care to brave for a fish..

they commented on the video that he didn't lose his radar ($x,xxx) and if he didn't rack port or stern against the pillar it may just be his vhf that got knocked down.


is it riskier than I'd take? sure. and its good to see this stuff as a reminder of where we need to be careful...

but the commentary in the video, the jerks laughing at the captain, etc. that's the stuff that makes my stomach churn. How can people enjoy someone elses (substantial) misfortune?

I'm with you 07. Plus a couple things said during the commentary were assumed. Like hitting the support, and taking out the out drives. Those boats have the propeller and drive shaft exiting the boat further forward than a out drive on a inboard/outboard boat. No chance that was damaged by a close call, unless there was severe damage to the rear of the boat. Not to mention, there is no consideration for possible mechanical difficulties that may have forced the Charter under the bridge.

Makes one consider leaving negative comments below the youtube video.
