RE:4 dollars a gallon...
Last night there was a news story on TV about the HUGE increases in the food prices over the last few years. The items they mentioned were basic commodities like meat, eggs, and milk. The price of wheat is at an all-time high!
When it comes to our economy, the price of oil is one of the biggest factors -- if not THE biggest. Can you think of any commodities that are not affected by the cost of fuel? Even if something can be manufactured without using fossil fuels, how will those products be delivered to consumers?
Being involved in a war doesn't help at all. The military consumes enormous quantities of fossil fuels every day. Armored vehicles like tanks and Bradleys don't get good mileage -- and never will. The only Navy vessels that use atomic energy are aircraft carriers and submarines. All of the other ships burn fuel oil, gasoline, or deisel. Jet aircraft also burn LOTS of fuel. Heck, a 747 fuel tank can hold about 50,000 gallons, and burns an average of one gallon of jet fuel every second!
I'm not saying that we should never fight another war, because sometimes it's a necessary evil. History has proven time and time again, that isolationist policies simply do not work. Humans live in a global society whether we like it or not, and sometimes bad people need to be forcibly removed from the gene pool.
Oops, got a little off-topic there. My bad.

What's with milk up at around $4.15 a gallon? I remember the 99cent days!

It's getting crazy! I hate to do it, but I may actually keep some of the bigger bass I catch this year -- just to put food on the table. I'm definitely going to keep the big perch that I catch while trolling @ Lake Stevens. My boat doesn't have a live well, so I'll have to bring a cooler full of ice and bonk the fish immediately after catching them.

Perch are great eating. I dunno about bass. Trout are great eating (as long as they aren't freshly planted fish)HillbillyGeek wrote:cutthroatkiller wrote:What's with milk up at around $4.15 a gallon? I remember the 99cent days!

Has anyone been fishing for perch recently up near Kenmore? Where do the perch go this time of year? They are very good tasting!Sam Kafelafish wrote: Perch are great eating. I dunno about bass. Trout are great eating (as long as they aren't freshly planted fish)

If you truly believe that our economy is in great shape at the moment, you're not paying very close attention.lskiles wrote:

I think our economy will continue to grow at least until the tax-and-spend Demos reverse the tax cuts helped into place by President Bush.

One positive note is that the value of your house (if you live in western washington) probably is much better now then it was 5 years ago..Drewp wrote:If you truly believe that our economy is in great shape at the moment, you're not paying very close attention.lskiles wrote:

That may be so. But I'm not talking about the last five years. I'm talking about right now. Locally we have managed to avoid the housing crisis that most of the rest of the nation is experiencing. Construction is down, home sales are down, foreclosures are up.
Let's hope the stimulus package works - though like Fishnislife mentioned, I too will be spending that money on credit.

I won't be getting a stimulus package, but then again, I don't deserve one cause I am a student and don't work...fishing is my work right now...lol. I'm all about working for what you need and not relying on the government to take care of you.
RE:4 dollars a gallon...
Not sure if i agree with you on the fact that you say we have managed to avoid the housing crisis;and you are saying us locally contruction, forclosure, and home sales are down correct, just wondering if you work in the construction field and i to am talking right nowDrewp wrote:That may be so. I am in the remodeling business and it is slowing way down. Right now I am working because of referrals from former customers. The phone isn't ringing like it should be.
There is far less activity in the big box stores with contractors than in the past. Builders are doing remodeling which puts a squeeze on me. It is getting very hard for people now to get home equity loans because that has tightened up and the value of homes is starting to drop.

WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY down it goes,I work for one of the largest electrical contractors in the greater puget sound area and our shop has laid off half the employees, the rest getting 3/4-1/2 days if lucky builders sitting on hundreds of homes "not selling"alot of home owners trying to do there own electrical, some expierence required we fix alot of these problems now.The cost of materials now HOLY CRAP,thats why we have to wire the same house 3 times THANKS ALOT U %$#@% CRACK HEADS,builders get to eat that cost, its all just slow and depressing but we can only live day to dayMarc Martyn wrote:I am in the remodeling business and it is slowing way down. LOL, that's why you can never peg people Not that it really matters, but I'm libertarian. I'm not liberal, but not conservative either...I always like to see things from all view points and angles...like the Sonic post...I came around to seeing the other side and I'm glad I did.Sam Kafelafish wrote:Kinda an interesting view for someone who I had pegged to be liberal...kutthroatkilla wrote: I'm all about working for what you need and not relying on the government to take care of you.

RE:4 dollars a gallon...
I work in the construction industry as well and we have had problems with selling 2 customs homes this last year. The market has slowed to an almost hault. I'm hoping with the Fed continuing to drop the intrest rates that the potential buyers will come out of there hiding and start to buy. My wife and have been happily watching the market as we are going to be buying a home soon. Hopefully this summer. A buyers market is something to take advantage of. As far as my work, we have laid off 3 people in the last couple of months and we are just now starting to pick up. This summer will be good. Our remodels are the only thing keeping us afloat. My boss decided a couple of months ago to start taking smaller remodels and additions knowing that times are getting tough. It has kept us above water but the new homes just sitting there are what is killing us.
I thought about this post the other day (and I wish I had a picture) driving from the office there are two gas stations in Bremerton right across the street from one another, one is a 76 and the other is a Arco-AM/PM. The 76 station is selling unleaded for $3.49 and the Arco is $3.19. You can guess who was busy. Not one car pumping at the 76 and the Arco was loaded. Funny how 200ft away you have a .30 price difference. I know it's the quality of gas but it looks crazy when you drive by. I always purchase either Shell, Texaco or Cheveron regardless of the price. I know how much crappy gas can effect an engine. I stay with at least a half way decent gas to keep my car running good. In the long run I think it helps to buy the better gas.

RE:4 dollars a gallon...
I was out this evening for a couple of hours and coming home the gas had jumped .05 cent a gallon. I run middle grade, have since the truck was new in '91. Right now it is at $3.39 and will most likely be $3.44 tomorrow morning.
I know that I am one of the antiques on the forum, but when I was in high school, gas was $0.028 a gallon and stayed there all through my high school years.
This is coming on too fast and the ripple effect is yet to be seen.:pale:

RE:4 dollars a gallon...
the economy is definently down. im a shipping manager for a large distributer of quarts and granite. all of our business is in remodels now, and, its mostly big builders buying. most of the small guys are getting a house here or there. we use to supply our slabs for countertops to some of the biggest condo/housing projects going, but, now its all remodels. try telling your customer over on post falls its going to cost them 25% more to ship thier orders due to fuel surcharges the truck lines charge, due to the rising gas prices. the national index for fuel surcharge is at 18%. some as high as 28%. this is added to the actual cost of a shipment. and like us, i imagine those basic commadities vendors are passing that on to consumers. dont know when it will end. im not a antique mark m., but, i remember bringing my dad his lunch at the standard oil station in connell when i was 8 years old, and it was .79 per gallon. you could get it at cenex next door for a dime cheaper if you were a farmer. THE GOOD OL' DAYS!!
