I'll see what I can find out regarding the crayfish rules and get back to you.

I agree about the language in the pamphlet - its written like it's a scientific report instead of just straight forward explain what is open and where and that's such a big part of why people are confused and end up fishing in areas they aren't supposed too.

I'll pass your suggestion upward, I think they are good.

Very well written Aa. And great suggestions. My hope is that someone is listening. But like usual, it will probably fall on deaf ears. As much as I appreciate WDFW's efferts at some point they have to realize that they are the laughing stock of the sportman community.
I got one for ya that will add to this whole debacle. My buddy was fishing Lake Pateros 2 weeks ago and like any normal fisherman who purchases his licence and an additional pole endorsement he was out there fishing 2 poles. Later on in the day he is instructed to stop and allow fish and game to do a check of his boat. Everything was grand except when they asked him who was fishing the two poles he replied just him. Well, he was ticketed for the extra pole. When he showed the warden his licence and assured him that he was within his legal right to use them both. The officer continued to write out the $109 ticket and told him he was still breaking the law. Pateros has a one pole per angler only enforced law. With his reg book in the boat, my friend pulled it out and with Pateros Lake dog eared from recent reading, he showed the officer that this was not in the book and how was he to know this. In quick response the officer said, oh it was posted online recently.
Really, really, REALLY! So my buddy said to me while telling me this story, what if I don't have the internet or I'm not on it enough to know these changes (which he isn't).
He is fighting the ticket and joins in the frustration with all of us on how to figure out the WDFW and the Reg book. Needless to say he is pissed and can not believe some of the insane laws that WA has when it comes to fishing.

Someone needs to step up and do something.

^ That is nuts. Hope your friend can win if he contests it.

The price for the two pole endorsement is a little overboard, IMHO. It's $12 in California, and about $25 in Washington.

The crayfish regulation came into effect due to the reproduction issues. They just wanted to make sure harvesting them didn't interfere with when they have young. Hope that helps!

With regards to the two pole endorsement. You will note that the entire Columbia river does not have the "no two pole" symbol in the regs. This is because it is listed in the river section and therefore the two pole endorsement does not apply. The regs state that the two pole endorsement is only good for use in lakes except ones indentified with the special symbol. Where you can use your two pole endorsement is on Rufus Woods and Roosevelt as they are listed in the lake section. I now it is sort of shady the way they did it but come on, did anyone really think that the State would let people use two rods all they way down the river to Bonneville?

Once again, just like you have explained, you almost have to be a rocket scientist to figure out the reg's. And did I really think they would let people use two rods all the way down the river?.......Yes, that is what we pay for. The only reason we can't or an emergency rule notification is posted online is because the tribal nests are harvesting to many and the numbers aren't great enough up river, so they try to regulate the average fisherman to "not effect the numbers". Who's really "effecting" the returns? I think there should be a regulation or licence fee for netting per pound of fish harvested. It's not like they couldn't afford it. Just have the casinos endorse it. Or shut it down all together. But we all know that wouldn't happen and imagine the controversy. I should just shop here.

I overheard one of my co workers saying the two pole was intended mostly for lakes. I could find out what the info behind the two pole rule is and report back.

Exclusions:

The two-pole endorsement is allowed on most lakes, ponds and reservoirs. Approximately 145 lakes and ponds are excluded from the two-pole option based on conservation and fishery management goals.

Criteria for excluded lakes, ponds and reservoirs:
Lakes containing ESA-listed species, determined on a case-by-case basis
Lakes connected to anadromous waters during fisheries for anadromous fish, i.e. salmon
Lakes managed for natural trout production
Juvenile-only lakes
Fly-fishing only waters
Lakes with selective gear rules and a reduced daily limit for trout
The two pole endorsement is not valid on the Columbia or Snake rivers mainstem, except Lake Roosevelt and Rufus Woods Reservoir.

In general, two-pole fishing is not allowed in saltwater, or in rivers, streams and beaver ponds. However, WDFW is evaluating areas and times when surplus fish may be available for harvest and the two-pole option could be allowed.

Exclusion list:

And yet, I support how this thread has turned, and turned again.

Pateros is a Reservoir, backed up with a dam. The rules as written in the regulations that we are suppose to be able to interpret would indicated that it would be legal to use the second rod, with the endorsement. Posting changes on the INTERNET are cowardly at best, criminal at worst. Does this mean that if you don't have a computer that you are just expected to pay the fines? Does this mean they can change the law while you are actually on the water?

Big D, your explanation may be reasonable, but it is not in the regulations I read. Perhaps the regulations would be more clear if they simply said that only the lakes shown with the symbol COULD be fished with two rods?

This last two days I went fishing with some good friends, some with legal experience, some with just a lot of fishing and hunting experience in Washington. Let me put it this way, I got the feeling that there is a reason that the enforcement need to carry a weapon now, and perhaps if the State took a look at why they would re-think how they are writing and enforcing the laws.

The honest become targets in Washington, yet the dishonest who try to hide the truth simply avoid being caught.

Not going to happen Marc. If this bothers you, note it doesn't bother me and I'm the one who started the thread, then you should lock it. It is not like you don't have a history of that. :dwarf:

Part of the job of being a moderator is to help keep the threads on subject. This last post was a friendly attempt to do that.

Furthermore, this is not your thread only. And as far as locking threads, I haven't done that for over a year and when I did it damn well needed to be done. So drop the sarcastic crap AA.

Sorry I am probably responsible for a lot of the subject changes - I'll try and keep that better in mind in the future.

Nothing to apologize for Stace.:) Your comments are appreciated and are very interesting to read. It was just a suggestion to keep the subject on track. If it wonders off, many people who are interested in the topic lose interest. Questions that may be asked on the subject never get answered. After a while, the conversation is on a totally different subject. It's just a little way of keeping things in order for those following the thread.

We could just rename the thread. I have found it very informative and helpful. And see that it has become very popular because it has gone beyond just its original content. I can guarantee this thread has informed anglers about something if not a couple of things that they may not have known or even thought about before.
Just my thoughts on it. But wait, now we have turned this thread yet again, just by talking about how this thread has been twisted and turned. Good stuff.

Geeze I hope I'm not throwing a wrench into the machine but when we used to fish saltwater two poles were totally legal and it cost nothing more. Our state finds ways to make money in the strangest ways.I personally always hated the 2 poles idea. What usually happened was "strike on pole one.Set the hook and the fight begins. BLAM the 2nd pole goes down, you think wow what a slammer that was. Set the first pole in the holder and fight pole #2.Lines got tangled . Out of two good hits no fish were landed. I never fished two poles again that season.

Saturday I made dough balls but did not catch a carp.I saw a few roll but could not get a hit.Any suggestions.? I dont do bow and arrow or dupont spinners.

Marc you keep on what youre doing. I have had threads removed and most times it was prolly the best thing that the mods did delete them. This site is the best cuz of all the hard work put into it.:salut:

Racfish, try a hair rig with your dough balls. Carp are not easy to catch, they are quite an elusive target, and locating them is half the fun. The guys at CAG helped me learn alot about carp angling, Euro rigs, bite alarms and other tricks.

The only reason I have a two-rod stamp is for carp and bass. I can't stand just sitting and waiting for carp, yet I love catching 'em. So, I'll rig one rod for carp, and fish the other for bass. Still, the price is a total rip.
