I know that you would think that a 140 hp motor might be too awkward for someone to steal or something..... but if the serial number is actually taken off of the motor in anyway, I would be completely untrusting of the seller.
After all.... why is there any reason to remove a serial number from an item. It's there for a reason, and it serves no purpose to remove it.
I know it is hard to pass up a good deal, but then think about if it was your motor that went missing and some purp was trying to sell it.

I agree that the whole situation is so suspicious. I am posting here hoping if police was unable to help maybe a victim/owner would show up. Otherwise, I would just buy it and enjoy a 2009 motor for $3,300.

What other reasons besides the outboard is stolen for not having a serial number?

2009 motor? :-k None. Not any that I can think of anyway. Maybe the number is imbossed or stamped somewhere, other than the plate that is riveted on.

Pull the cover off the motor and look on the inside of the cover itself. If you go back within this whole original thread aways... the writer talks about where under the cover the serial was also shown. It may be different with different manafactures, and I am not close to my outboard at the moment. But you can read what the orig. thread starter wrote about that.
