Big Squid

This is so cool! Does anyone know how and when to squid for Humboldts? Willing to teach me and take me out? Man that looks so fun.

The squid jigs sold at FredmMeyer and the like are for Humboldt. I've heard you pick them Up trolling near the bottom.

I jig for market squid here in the sound, the Humboldts stay in the ocean or stray unto the straight, but the sound isn't deep enough from what I've been told.

Some of the biggest humboldts on record have been found on the sound. They found one washed up by the narrows that was six feet long or something. So they're in there, I just don't know. I'd love to get out on the straights and catch one, or out of Westport. It looks like more fun than salmon! Plus, I'd love to have myself some calamari.

I'm familiar with market squids, I love those things! The best part is deep frying the tentacles. NOM.

Yeah, for sure, I think with a humboldt you'd be having more of a squid steak than calamari though, haha.

They look like fun to catch, I know the market squid are really fun to catch, so much so, that in the fall and winter I'm down on the edmonds pier with my light every Friday night from 8ish to 3ish.

They came in that year, whenever that video was made in decent numbers because of a warm trend in the water I guess. So people were catching them while the salmon were running in the Straits trolling for salmon. I know they've talked about them washing up on shore once in awhile in the sound but they don't get any in the sound in any decent numbers.

They were just up there that year. Glen said they weren't as good tasting as the little ones.
Has to do with the temp of the water.

I don't care how they taste, I just want to catch one! Even if I have to go to long beach. Squid are a passion of mine, as anyone who knows me well is well aware of. Before I got married I had a squid tank where I kept market squids. They are the coolest thing you can have in an aquarium, they change color, texture. When they eat is so cool. They're way smart, and get trained eventually to beg for food when you come into the room.

Eventually I'll be an expert on catching these guys. It'd be cool if someone has experience to share. Maybe in my old age I'll take folks out on squid hunting excursions!

I caught a Humboldt in 2010 in my boat off of Ucluelet about 5 miles. I got it on a 6' Tomic at 120 feet on South Bank. They were all over the place that year, thick along the Oregon coast, they died off and stunk up the beaches pretty bad. High water temps attracted them north.

Catching one? Like pulling in a big bag of garbage. I got it up near the boat and it did the jet boat deal and scooted around in little circles on the surface. I got I up near the transom and it squirted real stinky ink all over my motor.

That ink stunk and I did not want the thing in my boat. It was snagged on a tentacle so I hacked off the tentacle and bid it good bye! Then I took the tentacle into the boat and it proceeded to suck on my hand and wiggle. Gross!!

Hahahaha! Squid are awesome. In some countries, sauce made from squid ink is a delicacy!
