FISHING WITH CORN AS BAIT

Post by needabiggerboat » Sun Apr 29, 2007 12:17 am

HI,
I HAVE BEEN TOLD BY MORE THAN ONE FISHERMAN THAT FISHING WITH CORN IS ILLEGAL DUE TO THE FACT THAT FISH CAN NOT DIGEST IT AND ALL THE FISH THAT EAT IT WILL DIE.
NOW I AM A BIG FAN OF FISHING WITH CORN FOR MY FAVORITE FISH (KOKANEE) BUT I WOULD BE VERY QUICK TO STOP IF THIS IS THE TRUTH.
I ALSO REMEMBER MY GRANDPA USING CORN IN THE SPECIAL CHUM MIX WE USED TO USE ON AMERICAN LAKE WHEN I WAS LITTLE.
I HAVE LOOKED THROUGH THE REGS AND FOUND NO SUCH LAW OR RULE.
PLEASE HELP WITH ANY INFO YOU MAY HAVE.
THE LAST THING I WANT IS TO HURT THE FISH I LOVE.
THANKS TO ALL.

Now raises the other question. :-k Will you be able to afford it in the future with the price of corn setting new records because of the projected bio-fuel usage?

Great question Marc. I can see Willie Nelson getting rich as the oil tycoons have off of his gas stations for biodeisel.

It's not like he's gonna buy $100's of dollars worth of corn for fishing. A few cans/bags a year at most probably?
Likely not gonna hurt his pocket.

I think fishing with corn is illegal because of the fact that they cant digest it. I have been told this by a number of people.

That's what this entire thread was about, that's a myth (read the first post).

About the biofuel thing, Biofuel is a gimmick, combustion engines are on the way out. Fuel cells (hydrogen, methane, or electric) are on the way in. I predict Methane fuel cells to be of substantial interest in coming years (fuel from cow turds, how can you go wrong?).

I heard from a buddy that corn is bad to fish with because it gets stuck in their gills.

You guys would hear and read about it in the WDFW rules IF it was TRUE, but we don't read anything about it, so it's legal to use corn..

Like others have said, it's not in the regs as prohibited, so it's ok to use. If you are really concerned, simply go to the WDFW website and submit your question for an official answer. I know it is the go to bait for almost all Kokanee fishing!

I once caught a healthy fish with an egg hook out of its hind end so if anything was going to get caught in a fish's gill or choke it to death, I think it would have been that hook. Also remember, have you ever noticed that corn seems to pass right through us humanoids. The fish probably just pass it right through themeselves.

I've heard that corn works really well on Carp... Anyone else ever heard this? They sure are a kick in the pants to catch, however, I would never ever consider eating one.

I've used corn for years when fishing for kokanee. White shoe peg to be exact. I figure if a fish can eat a snail, shell and all, then corn isn't going to be a problem.

i honestly think this thread is funny. corn doesnt hurt fish. if so we would have been told a long time ago not to use it. cant use live minnows and everybodys knows that. its not a hidden law or anything

*** My only question is: What were these people fishing with? You know the ones that told you it was illegal ? Perhaps CORN ? Maybe they didn't want to share the action - seen it before - one guy asks another what he was using to catch all the fish - and is told the opposite of what was really used...(don't want to share 'secrets').:-#

Everyone is right though - if it is Illegal the WDFW and there were issues with the use of corn it would be noted as so in the Regs....
