Fishing in CO

I'll be in CO (mostly around Colorado Springs) for a week in July. I was wondering if anyone had any favorite CO fishing spots to share. Or a good resource like this web site, but only for CO.

What kind of fish are you looking to catch? Warm water ? I would recommend Wiper especially if you have never caught one before. They are a hybrid bass between a striper and a white bass, they can be kinda of tough to catch but if you hook into one its something that you will never forget, Phenomenal fighters. I would try pueblo res along the the dam at night, pueblo offers an assortment of fish walleye,bass LMB smallies, spots. catfish, trout, to pan fish, If you wanna chase big pike then i would say 11 mile res (which is in the mountains) stop in at the marina and they will point you in the right direction, As far as trout go then i would highly recommend heading to Antero res. by far some of the biggest trout in the state its not uncommon to catch one from 5-7lbs i have seen many 10 plus pounders come from that lake, all of these lakes are within an hours drive from the springs, there is also the catamont res, on pikes peak that can produce, here is a good sight to check out Coloradofisherman.com everyone on there is more than helpful to give a helping hand, If you want i can give you my phone # and give ytou a few more places that you can go along with baits tactics.

Yeah I'm in WY at least once a year. I'm not sure the exact dates this year, but will probably be there to catch some of frontier days. Getting together would be cool. I've seen some of your pics and they look great.

James, looks like you know the area. I spent 5 years there fishing and hunting out of Colorado Springs, when the Army let me off. LOL

Pueblo is surely the best warm water fishery near by. In July the Bass will be hitting early and late in the day, check out lake maps and fish the upper third of the lake, or the bays off of the lower third. The Walleye will be deep, but fish the cliffs with bottom bouncers or deep cranks. Shad is the primary forage species.

John Martin, farther south and East, is worth the drive if you have the time, perhaps a better Wipper (White Bass/Stripped Bass cross), and every bit as good for LMB. It has some Walleye, but not the numbers as Pueblo.

I found Eleven Mile to be only fair for Trout, but it has some big ones in it. The Northern Pike are numerous and large. Better yet, just upstream is Spinney Mountain. SM has much larger trout, and a huge population of Pike. SM is full of fresh water shrimp, or scuds, so fly fishing is a great way to hit them.

Antero is a fun little lake to fish, especially with a float tube. I don't think the fish are a large as Spinny Mountain, but this fairly shallow lake is fun to fish. In July the fish will be hitting damsell flies, so stock up on floating or sinking flies.
