Fishing with strangers
I usually make small talk about fishing with people fishing near me. Sometimes people will ask if I would want to go fishing with them sometime. I dont mind meeting up at a local lake and fish off a dock or something. MY question is - Do you guys usually exchange numbers and go on fishing trips?

RE:Fishing with strangers
hmmm. I have so many friends I never get a chance to fish with as it is. Guess it would really depend on the person. Maybe. I have made a couple friendships that way, but it's pretty rare.

For me, I like the real quiet time in the morning. However, just kicking back on the dock and having good conversation is cool, especially if you see some of the same people over and over. Now, I just want someone to invite me out on their boat sometime! :bounce:

RE:Fishing with strangers
I have taken out two guys from this site. Big AL and Quadfather. Our luck has not been to good but fun days on the water for sure, I am always willing to take out people because I like seeing them catch fish. Myself I have had my share and love fishing even if I do not get any. I grew up with a grandfather who loved to fish and was taking me out at about 3-4 and I never stopped. I do change what type fish I go after every few years but fishing is fishing and I do not keep much just like being out there and giving it my best shot! I spent most of my life in the rivers and lakes. But I really like the Salt! I just love hooking into a fish and not knowing what it is until it comes to the top. I have had my share of strange things come up over the years, Some I did not even know what it was. I am not a Salmon eater. I like White fish. But will be going after them just for the fun of it!

RE:Fishing with strangers
Some of my best fishing trips have been getting to know people I have met on the site and hitting the water with them. The amount I have learned on the water instead of reading about and the friendships I now have been a great benefit of starting this hobby ... okay okay its an addiction but you always need a sponsor and an enabler ... right? Thanks to everyone I have met here and that have shared their insight answering any questions I may have. I would start to name everyone but then I would see the Academy Award poeple giving me the wrap it up sign and the music would start as we go into commercial break. I will list a few though ... BassDood, AaronE, The Quadfather, Hookemdanno, BigbassDez, Trent Hale, Bassmasterderek, Sparky101, KevinB, TagWatson and not forget the Academy for making all of this happen ... Thanks Mike & Aaron!
'course they don't have biscuits and gravy ... but if they did, I bet everyone would eat there.

If you meet someone anywhere and you hit it off, why not go fishing? Does it really matter where you meet?

RE:Fishing with strangers
Talking with someone makes fishing more enjoyable for me atleast. Humans are just social creatures. Some people will end up telling you their favorite fishing holes after talking for an hour or two. I guess I just have to go with my gut. If I feel uneasy about it, then I probably shouldn't go on a trip across the state. I went out on a boat with a stranger at a small lake a few weeks ago. My gut felt fine about that.

RE:Fishing with strangers
I spend about 90 percent of my time this year on the same lake, at this point it's more about the company at the dock and the relaxation of the lake. Plus, I've learned a TON of stuff just asking people what they are doing, how etc.
Just about everyone I've met this year has been pretty cool, and people usually are pretty cool about helping out, giving tips, etc. I like to ask people what lakes they go to, what's working, which ones to avoid etc.
I won't get into the annoying situations and/or people that make me want to leave the lake and go somewhere else, that's for another conversation

I would definitely think there is a difference between meeting people on site and having some initial dialog vs. randomly at a fishing pier. But hey, whatever works to find new fishing buddies!

RE:Fishing with strangers
Well, for me, I've been able to go out with the Quadfather a couple times now and he hasn't tossed me off his boat and into the Sound yet Been my first time fishing saltwater from a boat and big fun.
My attitude is it's probably safer and better results to go with folks from the site here. You get a chance to get a feel for what they're all about first before you head out. As always, if your internal "crazy guy" detector goes off, pay attention to it.:thumleft:

RE:Fishing with strangers
I think my order of preference would be.
1. Having a fishing buddy from work
2. Fishing buddy from this website
3. Random fishing buddy from dock
The only problem with a fishing buddy from work is that you work on the same days as them. I took a buddy from FL that I work with trout fishing for the first time. Another guy at work met up with me at the Bonneville dam to teach me how to shad fish. There is just more trust and comfprt their becuase you see them 4-5 times a week and probably have worked with them for a while.

Good question Returnofthefish. Unfortunately, in today's world, I personally would be very leery about meeting someone for the first time while out fishing, and exchanging phone numbers or accept an invite for a trip. I think had I not been doing police work for the last 21 years, I might feel differently about it, but because of my job, I see what people do to others and it’s not worth taking a chance and becoming a victim. If I have learned one thing over the years in my job, it is this; you never know who you are talking to, dealing with, or standing next to. You could be standing in line next to someone at Cabela's or Costco who has committed the worst of crimes, and never know it. I once arrested a guy wanted for homicide after a standoff. He had been a fugitive for 7 years, being chased by the Oregon State Police. When I arrested him, he was clean shaven, dressed in slacks and a shirt, had kids, and looked like the average Joe. You just never know, and for me, it’s not worth the risk. I am not paranoid; I’m just very aware of my surroundings, and careful.

RE:Fishing with strangers
I think this question got me thinking. Usually, not always, but usually, I make friends elsewhere and then "allow" them to share my time and spots. Seldom to I meet up with a person dock side and think that I just have to share my time and spots with them.
On the other hand, if I have known them for some time, like through a web site, like this one, and I know where they come from, fishing wise that is, then that is a different thing.
Fishing for me is a way to cool my jets, calm my mind, and keep from going postal in life. So, I had better know who is going with me and know that they are not going to drive me crazy.
Oh yea, my son and best friend seem to always want to join me, so the boat is always full. There is not a lot of time to take out new "potential" friends.

Too much water, so many fish, too little time.
