What do you do with fish remains
What do you do with fish remains
usually there are just some heads or tails laying around and I throw them in the yard waste bin. But we've been hitting the sound and really cleaning up on Flounder (which by the way, are delicious if you shake n bake them. I use the same cajun powder that I use on Razor clams...)
with all the heat.... a bucket of dead flounder get smelly and attract flies. Like really smelly. like smell it from 20FT away smelly (or smell it from the neighbors house smelly).

I throw it over the fence so the raccoons can eat it. I never smell anything.

Put it in a plastic bag and freeze it, then on trash day you can put it in the yard waste bin. Personally, I freeze it and then use the stuff for crab/crayfish bait. One can also use it for chum.
RE:What do you do with fish remains
the freezer idea is good. I have plenty of frozen crab bait already...... but freeze then toss in the trash would work-
I used to toss it over the fence on the farm..... but the pile i had the other day was just a LOT and I didn't feel comfortable with it. so instead I have a science experiement, a stinky one at that, in my yard waste bin... luckily the temps are dropping for a couple days...

RE:What do you do with fish remains
I saved all my trout heads and innards for crab bait this year. Unfortunately it was only enough for one weekend of crabbing, but we caught a lot of crab. However, it took up a good portion of space in our freezer, which my wife wasn't happy about, so probably won't try that again.....unless we get a bigger freezer.
RE:What do you do with fish remains
I take them to the dumpster at my work. If I was going catfishing in the near future I'd take them along.

They go in the flower beds. Releases lots of nitrogen into the soil, which attracts earthworms - so I get trout bait when I want it and my wife says her flowers have never looked better since I started using "organic fertilizer" on them hehe....

They're also good for gardens, so if you have any neighbors to offer it to or yourself, till it into your garden for healthy future vegetables to go with your fish fry.

Crab bait or crayfish bait.Perch stuff I use to catch more Perch with.
When youre up to your rear end in alligators, its hard to remember that the initial plan was to drain the swamp.

I do exactly the same thing, keeping the fish heads and tails for crab bait. I return all crab remains to the Sound. Anything that I want to go out in the trash, I also freeze then put in the trash can on pick up day.

With Salmon ribs with a lil meat and the head I use for making fish stock or aspic glaze.Fins and tails go in it also.Throw in celery florettes and chopped onion sim for a while after a boil then drain it off.You end up with a wonderful stock.
