Pinks in the sky yet?

Post by jf0 » Mon Aug 03, 2009 7:46 pm

I only started Salmon fishing 2 years ago when the pinks were here last and got started in October so I am wondering if they are in the Sky this early.

Thanks! =]

PS. I'll add to the many warnings and stories already here about vehicle break-ins especially when leaving your vehicle at the side of the road for a river hike. Last time I was up at Ben Howard road we got hit and they stole my (now) wife's purse and pants. Yes, it was a bad idea to leave the purse in the car, definitely won't do that again. And she was wearing waders, this was hilarious hearing her explain it to the 911 operator that her pants were stolen.

The thieves did not get far though, they hit subway, a gas station, got home and ordered a porn subscription which was immediately rejected and froze the card since the card she had was for people with poor credit trying to rebuild and they do not allow that sort of thing :p

jfo,
I would suggest targeting the Snohomish before you consider the Skykomish. The fish are in better shape in the Snohomish system and are usually a few hours removed from the saltwater when you pull them out of the Snohomish. I don't even think the Sky is open at the moment (don't hold me to it) but regardless their wouldn't be any fishable numbers until mid-late August up in the Sky. Plus, its a shorter drive and usually much better parking/access.

I have a few good spots on the Snohomish that are great deep water stretches perfect for tossing jigs and dick nites into for Pinks. Your more then welcome to tag along any time I'm out there.

The tackle for pinks is simple. 1/4 oz pink or chartreuse jigs tied straight to mainline and twitched off the bottom. The 50/50 or Pink Dick Nite will also take its fair share of fish. Corky/yarn work as well, but something about the twitching of that jig just does it for those pinks.....

Good luck!

Would love to find some new spots closer to the ocean, I always have my lady with me though so if that aint a crowd then let me know.

I use either a 50/50 DN on a 3 way setup, or a Pink/Chart Blue Fox directly on the main.

a9, just kinda curious if you fish from a boat or do you bank it? if you bank it, have you ever fished below the i-5 free way on the snohomish if you follow the trail south? i take my dogs walking that trail and was just wondering if i should take my rod once the river opens.
thanks,
hanapaa

jfo, im kinda in the same boat as you. my other half is getting into fishing pretty good and wants to fish more from the banks. we have a boat but most of the time we always have our rods in the car and we just drive around and if it looks good we fish. i normally cast out for her if there are lots of guys and let her reel in. im new the the salmon fishing too and will be more the happy to let you know what i know, which isnt that much. is that your boat? do you plan on taking that in the rivers aswell? cant wait for them pinks to get in!!!

I fish both bank and boat. Depends on where I'm at. I fish the saltwater almost exclusively, usually by boat. If I'm fishing a river its by shore. Although I only target the rivers a half dozen times a year at best...Usually just taking friends and family who don't fish out for pinks on the local rivers, getting them into messes of fish....

The stretch down below I-5 has decent fishing opportunities on the east side of the river. This area is the Langus Waterfront park.

I like fishing up higher on the system. The river is pretty wide down there (few hundred feet) and so the fish are obviously more spread out. But Langus is a good spot to chuck buzz bombs from the shore.

jf0,
Pick up some pink jigs. Just cast em to deep slow pools, let em sink for 10 secs, then twitch em in...It kills em. Try using a different color then pinks...Think Green :alien:

We only take the boat in the lakes, it's a pretty small boat and I do not know the rivers here enough to be comfortable.

jfo, i think you boat is fine for the snohomish river. i think it would be awesome from the snohomish boat launch all the way out to the sound. you should try and take your boat in there for pinks and silvers this year.

Low tide and crappy launch alert - ramp in the town of Snohomish is pretty busted up in low tide and you'll have to wait for the water to rise to launch/retrieve. And limited parking... but what a great spot to put your boat in for those pinks!

I lost my reg book on my last camping trip. Does the Snohomish open up this weekend for pinks? I saw the post about the Skagit opening up, but that may be too far a drive. If I drop my 12' inflatable with an electric motor will I be ok, or will I get ran over by dual merc's kicking up 40 foot rooster tails like on the snoqualmie. Langus looks like a good starting point, I can launch from anywhere. I'm hoping to get out this weekend for sure, I've been off the water for weeks now and my gear is getting dusty. #-o

gian, i think you should be ok if your electric motor is big enough. right now you would be since the river is low and not flowing fast at all. so you might just have to fish where you launch because i dont think you will be going up river to much just on an electric.

Stay on shore. No need to chance it in an inflatable. Plenty of good bank access on the Snohomish, and plenty of fish to catch...

The current at Langus can really move.....It can blow you way upriver on the incoming.....
