Smoking fish problem

Post by motorek » Thu Aug 27, 2009 9:26 am

I have unusual problem to smoke fish. I recently caught couple pinks, I bought smoker - it works great but.. I live in apartment and it is not so convenient to smoke fish in front of my apartment. The mount of smoke is to big and I afraid that people or landlord can complain. Does anybody know where I can go eventually to smoke my fish? I have electric smoker so I am looking for public power access like a camp or park. Can I smoke fish in kayak point park?
If anybody have idea please let me know where I can go to smoke fish.

Well I am not sure on any locations to smoke your fish but I would read you lease. If it doesn't state anything in there about smokers then you should be fine. You could jsut go ask the manager also. Most appartmets won't let you have a charcoal grill due to the fire hazard and they might consider this to be the same type of fire hazard.........even though it's not.

good luck on your search and enjoy your salmon.

Catch enough to offer the potential complainers some of your smoked fish.

I see you are in Arlington... can't remember the name of the park on the river. It's something like "Salmon Park." But any of those nice parks that have a larger shelter with picnic tables under it, I am sure would have an outlet. You may have to look at the outside wall of a restroom...... but try those shelters.

Do you soak your wood first? It will burn much slower and cooler. If possible, not sure how you appts are, use an extension cord and be down wind of the units.

Do you have a deck? What about running the smoker over night.

I would just go for it. The smoker really only kicks off smoke for about 20 mins (about a half hour after you re fill the chip tray) and dosnt really smoke after that.

Plus, it can take 11 hours with a min. of 6 hours to smoke salmon. Thats a long time to be sitting somewhere smoking fish. Unless you take Quads advice and find a place on a river where you can fish too

I did not soak the chips, it would help probably. My back yard is small and when people (the same me) have open window to let the fresh air go trough apartment the smoke did exactly the same. Very quickly the smoke smell inside. I turned off it quickly and nobody complain, but I was scare :)

Yea, try soaking the wood first. For about 20-30 minutes before you add it. That will help alot. The smoke will be much lighter and last longer. It wont cause a big cloud like dry wood can do. I dont know how much wood your using but you might want to start with less and add more if needed. I like to get the meat hot and smelling good first, about an hour after closing the door, then add the wood chips.

It smells so good.... no body would complain.

Hope this helps! :chef:
