Bass Scents

what scents work best on bass lures. most of mine have been handled alot so want to give them some scent.

JT For right now bass scent is not so much important .. I only use scent during late fall and early winter season when bassin .. as long as you dont smoke , or mess around with gas or oil your okay ..for this time of year just keeping using different plastics and top waters first thing in the morning and evening hours... make a deal with you , once you catch your first bass 3 pounds or bigger ill hook up with you and spend a day on the lake (your choice ) ... DEAL ?

I don't use very much sent for bass like Dez, but when I do I like Bait Mate scents the best.

I will not use plastics without scent either cooked into them, or added on after, or even sometimes both. It boils down to a confidence thing. The more confident you are with a particular bait, the better you will fish it.

I dont normally use scent, but I do have some nitro grease for lubing swimbaits and some crawfish smelly jelly i always forget to use.

Also, I, and a lot of other people, don't buy the smoking=less fish. I caught just as many then as I do now after quitting.

I find it very intresting that you would mention the smoking thing. When I was younger I didnt smoke (obviosly) and compared to now, there hasnt been a huge difrence in the amount of fish that I catch. The numbers arnt lacking by any means. When panfishing I always keep my index finger on the line to detect light bites. So my real, line, pole, lure, weeights, swivle, leader and what ever slse must just reek of nicotine. So even if one were to argue about smelly jelly, I dont put on my line, rarely my leader and weight. When I was really young I remember a lady claiming that because she smoked she caught more fish. Honest to god truth, she spit on every piece of power bait she casted and caught a ton of fish. Way over her limit. And she did in fact keep them all, she must have had 15. So I can see where you are coming from with the smoking thing. But every single step ahead that I have on these fish, I am going to take full advantage of. So Smelly Jelly it is LOL

scents have never worked for me either, so i concentrate more on keeping unwanted scents off my baits as opposed to putting good ones on. things like sunscreen, bug spray, and gas i avoid like the plague on fishing day, and when i have to put sunscreen on, i have some YUM attractant spray that i will spray on my hands then wash them in the lake. also, a recent study showed bass hate the smell of hand soap about as much as gasoline, so i always wash my hands in the lake very first thing before i even touch a pole.

yup same here. i catch just as many fish since i have stopped smoking compared to when i did smoke. i havent noticed a difference one bit.

i have tried a few different scents and havent really noticed alot of difference. although i still use it just in case. i forget the name of what i have dr something lol.

I concur with CK14. Megastrike I think the bass will hang on to the lure longer with the scent.

I haven't used scents on my lures in more than ten years. I got away from it because I usually forgot to use it and would also forget they were in my tackle box waiting to be a disaster! I finally got a scent caddy because they were crowding my box, but in time I eventually got away from them.

I never saw a significant advantage to them. Fast baits like crankbaits and spinnerbaits are for reaction, same with topwaters including plastic frogs. They hit out of reflex not a scent trail.

On worms and jigs, I usually will use those with scent and taste attractants infused in the manufacturing process or bagged in salt.

Can't over emphasize the importance of keeping repelling scents off your hands and fishing gear. While attractant may not be that important. Bug spray, sun block, gas, and oil will definitely keep bass off your hook.

Looks like DT beat me to it. This scent has been a key role in catching most if not all of the smallmouth I have caught this year.

Another noteable scent for bass has been Nitro Craw dad. This gel type attractant adherese well to both soft plastcis and hard baits.

removing that protective coating is very stressful for fish if you are planning on releasing them.

I think he means the slime that gts on his hands while releasing the fish, not using the fish as a louffa.
