How fast do salmon swim?

Post by CLEARLAKE » Sun Nov 01, 2009 2:00 pm

Any idea how fast salmon will migrate upriver? I know there is a million factors but a general rule of thumb is what I'm after here. Like I live at about river mile 26 so if a fish enters the skagit today about how log til it gets up here? Thanx!

Give em 48 hours and they'll be there.

Really thoigh, their movement is dictated by a lot of factors. Better off staying mobile and moving around till you find fish, rather than waiting for them to come to you.

here is what you need to look at how high is the river or low, pressure on the system, fast water or frog water and how far they are going
If it looks fishy, Then fish it, If it dont look fishy, fish it anyways. <')}}}}><

I fish not because I regard fishing as being terribly important, but because I suspect that so many of the other concerns of men are equally unimportant, and not nearly so much fun. ~ John Volker

Depending on the flow rate of the stream a Coho Salmon can swim from 0.8 MPH up to 1.67 MPH. They can sprint up to a speed of 24.5 MPH, that's about 36 feet per second.
Bragging may not bring happiness, but no man having caught a large fish goes home through an alley.
