Cottage Lake (63 acres): Cottage Lake is located on the Woodinville-Duvall Road three miles east of downtown Woodinville. Access is through the county park on the north shore, along the highway. A ramp is planned, but only bank and car-topper access is available now. Cottage's high productivity yields fat 10-12 inch rainbow trout from a spring fry plant. It also provides better-than-average opportunity for fat yellow perch, largemouth bass, black crappie, and brown bullheads.

This reservoir of 1,150 acres is located about six miles south of Cottage Grove just east of London Road and can be drawn down drastically in low water years. It has boat ramps at the northwest end near the dam and at the southeast end near where Wilson Creek enters the reservoir. Cottage Grove contains stocked rainbow and some native cutthroat trout as well as some good-sized largemouth bass, bluegills, black crappies and brown bullheads. An 11 pound bass was taken from the reservoir in 1995. Currently, there is a catch and release restriction on bass more than 15-inches long in the reservoir. In late November of 2009, Wayne Masoner related to the author an incident that took place after a club tournament held in 1989 by the Willamette Bass Club. It seems that Jack Cabe was fishing near a culvert almost directly across the reservoir from Wilson Creek with a 4-inch purple “slider worm” when he hooked and landed a 21-inch crappie that weighed five pounds. The catch was witnessed by several members of the former bass club, but was the crappie was released instead of being turned in for state record recognition. P Heley

Island County's Cranberry Lake covers 125 surface acres and has a maximum depth of 25 feet. It's elevation is only 20 feet. Fish species include largemouth bass, yellow perch, brown bullhead catfish and planted rainbow and brown trout. Public access is through Deception Pass State Park. The boat launch area is best suited for hand carried craft and has very little room for maneuvering a trailered boat. No internal combustion engines are allowed on the lake. The state park also provides a fishing dock and has some bank fishing opportunities. I was once casting floating minnow lures from the bank for largemouth bass and had an 18 inch brown trout smash the lure as it was being twitched on the surface. I missed the fish on the first strike but hooked it on the next cast. I was surprised to see in a fishing report that there was smallmouth bass present in this lake -- perhaps an error in identification? This is a very good camping/fishing destination. The state park provides 246 camp sites. Bob Johansen

An 80 acre lake at 4475 feet, holds brook and rainbow. FS campground on the north end with a boat launch. Go up east side of Okanogan river 12 miles then east 14 miles up Tunk Valley to the lake. Located 15 miles northeast of Omak and at 4,475 feet elevation, this 81-acre lake intermittently drains to the east to Lost Creek and the West Fork of the Sanpoil River. The north half of the lake is on USFS land and the south half is on the Colville Indian Reservation. Private cabins surround the entire lake. Although the lake is accessible from both the south and north, the northern route (Forest Road 101) is more traveled, well marked, and a better road. The lake hosts rainbow and brook trout, although the brookies seem to outnumber the rainbows by about 20 to one. Mike MacGregor

Contained within Olympic National Park, Crescent Lake is regulated by the National Park Service. Call (360) 452-4501 for information. The lake has unique populations of rainbow (Beardslee) and cutthroat (crescenti) trout. "The lake's waters have very little nitrogen. This limits the growth of phytoplankton, tiny plants (like algae) that float in lake waters. Without them, the water stays clear. In some places you might see as far down as 60 feet. Clarity and reflecting light give Lake Crescent its stunning blue-green color. Its protected waters are home to fish like the Beardslee and Crescenti trout, two types of fish found nowhere else in the world."

Jefferson County’s Crocker Lake is located about 3 ½ miles south from Port Discovery Bay. It covers 65 surface acres, is mostly quite shallow and lies at an elevation of 190 feet. Public access used to be allowed at a Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife site but the lake has now been closed to fishing for several years. I was lucky enough to fish it a few times in the past and caught several nice sized largemouth bass. By Bob Johansen

Mason County’s Lake Cushman (Reservoir) is located about 4 miles NW of the town of Hoodsport. It covers about 4000 surface acres, reaches depths of about 200 feet and lies at an elevation of 735 feet. The water is gin clear and you can see the huge stumps beneath the surface; a remnants of the logging operation that took place prior to building the big power generation dam. The north end of the lake has lots of huge rocks that could damage the prop or lower unit of you outboard engine (see photo below). I visited the lake during a big water draw down and took a few photos. Fish species include rainbow and cutthroat trout, Dolly Varden, steelhead, largemouth bass and Chinook salmon. Reference book, “Lakes of Washington,” mentions that Chinook salmon apparently reproduce naturally in this reservoir. I always used the launch ramp at the state park when fishing the lake for bass. It has a good concrete plank launch ramp and lots of parking. The park is now private but I think it still allows launching for a fee. Note - some photos are of low draw down on this reservoir.
