I-82 Ponds (8 to 30 acres): These seven gravel pit ponds located between Union Gap and Zillah along Interstate 82 are open year around. Ponds 1 and 2, located between Mellis Road and Donald Road, support largemouth bass, yellow perch and pumpkinseed sunfish. Expect good fishing for small pan-sized perch and sunfish. Both Ponds 1 and 2 are closed to walleye fishing; Pond 1 is used as a walleye research project. Pond 3, east of Donald Road, has fair fishing for pumpkinseed sunfish, largemouth bass and yellow perch. Moving east, Ponds 4 and 5 are stocked with rainbow and brown trout, with browns to 16 inches caught occasionally. Fishing is fair for crappie and bass. Pond 4 is located at the end of Finley Road. Buena, or Pond 6, is located off Buena Loop Road, and should have good early-season fishing for stocked rainbow trout. Pond 7, east of Buena, has a fair population of largemouth bass. Access to all ponds except Buena is by walk-in. A county ordinance prohibits boats with gasoline-powered motors. Buena Pond (#6) accessibility Level 1. DP, WCT, Blk Tpa, level. *NOTE - for posting fishing reports, if you know which pond you fished please post it under that pond!

I drove up the Mountain Loop Hwy, East of Granite falls. Independence lake is off of Coal lake road. Forest Service road about 1/4 mile past the Big Four Ice Caves. I carried my float tube, fins, and crap into the lake... about 1/3 mile. It was a beautiful sunny day. I slowly dragged a black wooly bugger around... hat a couple of hits on this, but missed the hookset. Seems like it always came when my hands were busy. Then I floated a worm off the bottom, with no hits. Then it was power eggs.... power bait + worm... not hits. Later it was those SHWEET fishingcreek spinners. I did have some hits off the Armadillo spinner, but just couldn't seem to set the hook. The lake definetly has trout in it. I could see them with my polarized lenses. Small fish about 10" It was very strange though that these fish may have had some sort of "Funk" on them. (remember, this is a crystal clear alpine lake. 25' visibility.) It looked as though someone splashed milk on the fish. As I said, I never landed one,, but the ones I saw in the water had a weird white splotchy pattern on them. I'm thinking it was some kind disease or something. Now I even more want to go back and catch one. For those who know the area.. The road in has now been re-graded since the wash out. It's a great little place for an over night. The next lake over the ridge is about 1.5 hours away, and twice as big. The first lake,,, Coal lake is loaded with Eastern Brooke. Quadfather

Pacific County's Island Lake is a good choice for early season bass. A small, shallow lake near the ocean, it is among the first to warm up in the early spring. I like to fish it during the first warm days of March. Island Lake covers 56 surface acres, a maximum depth of only 8 feet and is at an elevation of only 20 feet. Fish species include largemouth bass, yellow perch and bluegill. Prime bass habitat in this stained water lake includes lots of lily pads, lots of shoreline brush and trees and lots of old logs in the water. There are no shoreline homes on this lake. Public access is provided by the Washington State Department of Fish and Wildlife. The small access area has few amenities other than limited parking space, and a shoreline launch site that is limited to hand carried craft. Bob Johansen

Jameson Lake (332 acres): This popular lake 8 miles south of Mansfield suffered the same high-water problems as Grimes during the past winter. Fishing has been excellent for yearling rainbow trout to 11 inches during previous seasons, with some carry-overs to 3 pounds. Success this year should be fair-to-good depending on water clarity and temperatures. There are resorts and a large public access with camping area. Disabled accessibility - Level 2. Two WCTs, lgs, Blk Tpa around launch. Also camping spots, dirt paths, gravel paths, big area. (Note: Disabled accessibility, camping and launching information may not apply this year because of access problems. Call the WDFW regional office in Ephrata for updated information.)

There is a smalll public access from a short trail with very Limited parking. If you have a float tube or a inflatable you could get it on the lake with out any trouble. Joy has a good population of Trout, Bass (smallmouth and largemouth). I have heard that there is also channel cats and crappie but I have never caught or seen any. There have been many large bass caught in Joy over the last few years. Reports of fish up to 8 lbs. Personnel I have only caught a few over 4 but the average size is probably 1.5 to 2.0 lbs. Lake has a variety of structure as in docks, pads, wood and weeds. The bottom consist of rock and gravel to mud and sand depending on the area. Best times to fish this lake are june-aug. Out of all the times I have been out there I have never seen anyone else fishing. Brian

If you don't mind hiking through seven hours of slick rocks, devils club, vine maple, steep hills, and constantly getting lost and having to relocate the trial, this one is for you. We picked up 40 nice trout in the 9"-14" range in the two days we were there. The lake is southeast of Rockport on the Illabot Creek road. Go up the road 19 miles to Arrow creek and find the trail on the west side of the creek going straight up the side of the road. The trail goes through about 1 1/2 hours of woods before hitting endless meadows of very slick rocks. The trail is really hard to locate in places. Bring a map and keep your pack light. Have lots of patience and leave the weak and out of shape at home. Larry

Hiking back to the High Camp from Lake Donald and Loch Eileen, I stopped at pretty Lake Julius for 45 minutes. This lake was also full of aggressive cutthroat trout. In 45 minutes I hooked 10, eight of which were caught and released. The fish here were a tad smaller - averaging 6 to 9 inches in length. Again - spinners and spoons did the trick. The weather for this three lake trip was great - in the mid-60s with clear, calm skies. The autumn foilage made the hike one of the most breathtaking I've ever experienced! J Kruse
